Kevin Murphy is currently helping GOAL respond to an outbreak of cholera in the West African nation of Sierra Leone. Below he gives a detailed account of what GOAL has done to prevent this disease from spiralling out of control.
“Cholera is a water-borne disease commonly spread via contaminated water sources. It can cause death through dehydration within a matter of hours, making urgent response a necessity.
Over the past three decades, the GOAL Mile has grown to become one of Ireland’s most popular annual fundraisers.
The event was established in 1982 when GOAL’s late chairperson and international athlete, Noel Carroll, came up with the idea to encourage people to run a mile at The Phoenix Park on Christmas morning for GOAL.
GOAL has worked on behalf of the poorest of the poor for 35 years. Since our foundation in 1977, we have spent in excess of €720 million in more than 50 developing countries, delivering aid to some of those most affected by humanitarian crises.
