Over $250,000 was raised at the annual GOAL New York Ball 2012.

More than 360 of the great and good of New York society packed into the beautiful Gotham Hall on Broadway for an evening of food, drink and entertainment. Most importantly, guests learnt about and raised money for some of the aid agency’s projects across the developing world. The evening began with a red carpet, hors d’oeuvre and cocktail reception, followed by dinner, an all-night bar, live music, a special Irish dance performance and the by now legendary after-party. The night also included a raffle, a casino, and silent and live auctions. The auctions raised tens of thousands of dollars, with prizes including a safari trip to South Africa, luxury holidays in Ireland, and a chance to get a first-hand view of some of our humanitarian work in Haiti. Guest speaker was Ambassador Anne Anderson, Ireland’s permanent representative to the United Nations. Ms Anderson spoke about GOAL’s ever-growing reputation on the international stage, and praised its continued fight for a better future for those who need it most. This year, the Ball’s special project was GOAL’s street children’s projects in Ethiopia, which will receive more than $160,000 of the proceeds. This dynamic project helps to deliver a variety of services to children-at-risk in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. These include GOAL’s drop in and rehabilitation centre, which offers sport and recreation, non-formal education, medical treatment, shower and washing facilities, and training in various life skills.
The project also provides family reunification services to children who seek it, vocational and lifestyle training, and helps youths start their own small businesses. Speaking about the Ball, GOAL’s USA Director, James Kelly, said: “It was a truly amazing night, and $250,000 exceeded everybody’s expectations. That amount of money is going to change so many people’s lives. I’m really proud of, and thankful to, everyone involved. It’s nearly double what we raised last year, and hopefully the event will continue to grow.”
