The GOAL Mile 2012 was a huge success!
|
In all, 100 GOAL Miles took place over the festive and New Year period in 2012, with tens of thousands of people taking part once again. To date, close to €140,000 has been raised for GOAL’s various humanitarian programmes across the developing world.
Flagship GOAL Miles were held in Dublin this year at Killiney’s Kilbogget Park, in Irishtown and on the Greenhills Road in Tallaght, and both attracted a huge number of runners, joggers and walkers. Miles were organised at a wide variety of venues across the country, from beaches to prison yards, piers, sports pitches, parks, streets and almost everywhere in between.
Every county in Leinster, Munster and Connacht was represented, while another six counties - Donegal, Down, Cavan, Monaghan, Derry and Antrim – staged Miles in Ulster.
The fastest Mile was run by Chris Harrington at Cork IT on Christmas morning, who completed the distance in four minutes and 35 seconds – a time that was even more impressive considering he was wearing a Santa suit for the day that was in it. There was also plenty of familiar faces at the Miles this year, including former Ireland football manager, Brian Kerr; RTÉ news presenter, Anne Cassin, Irish Times editor, Kevin O’Sullivan; and lead singer of The Coronas, Danny O’Reilly.
